Pressing Techniques !

We handpiecers have more freedom in pressing than machine piecers because seam allowances remain free.
In the above four patch example I have "twirled the seams in a counterclockwise direction creating a small
four patch where the seam allowances intersect. This greatly reduces bulk and will make handquilting through
intersections easier.
Here is the back side of a very small (4") eight pointed star block. I have twirled the seams that
meet in the center of the star in a counterclockwise direction and the seams on the outer points in a
clockwise direction. Notice the center intersection and the intersections where the set-in seams meet.
You can finger press the seams as you go along and even change your mind as to the direction they should
be pressed.
Hint : If you find that you have a small hole where the seams intersect, try reversing
the direction of the twirled seams. Viola ! The hole is gone !
After constructing the entire block, take it to your ironing board for a final pressing. Use a pressboard
like the June Tailor Cut 'n Press [tm] with a grid to square up the block before continuing to sew the quilt top.
