Pandora's Box
I've designed an original wall hanging utilizing basic components to demonstrate the techniques for handpiecing.
From the simple four-patch to the most difficult eight-pointed star, my connect-the-dots method means success.
Border prints add a kaleidoscopic effect and always make for an interesting mitered corner. Designing on the fly
will be encouraged. Each of the two parts is an independent session. You may take "Part I", "Part II" or both.
Come, open Pandora's Box. You'll never know what creative powers will be unleashed!
- October 14, 2000 10:00am - 1:00pm Kaleidoscope Star/Pandora's Box Part I
- October 21, 2000 10:00am - 1:00pm Bordering with Border Prints/Pandora's Box Part II
Tumbling Blocks - Beginning Handpiecing
Only one template and a variety of fabrics will produce a dramatic 3-D effect. You'll learn the basic running
stitch and principles of hand piecing. It really is easy to sew the dreaded "Y" seam that machine piecers
hate. Also known as "Baby Blocks", it's a good way to get started and use placement of darks, mediums and
lights to make the blocks pop out.

Fun and Games With Color
The most fun you can have on a Sunday afternoon! Using Jinny Beyer's Portable Palette, you
can put colors together without agonizing for hours. We'll go through lots of color exercises
to choose combinations based on the color wheel, theme fabric and planned scrap style. After
some practice with the swatches in the palette, you'll be pulling bolts from the store shelves
for several "virtual" quilts. With the energy of a game show, put on your running shoes and get
ready for an easy class to learn about color. Not only will your quilts have the zing that great
color brings, but you will learn to recognize the fabrics you are reluctant to buy and why they
are necessary as the blenders, accents, lights and deep darks. Limited to the first 12 to sign
up. You could be a winner!
- February 6, 2000 1pm-4pm
- July 9, 2000 1pm-4pm
- October 8, 2000 1pm-4pm
Mariner's Compass
Make one to decorate your sewing box or several for a quilt top as I did in "Joie de Vie".
I'll share my unique method for handpiecing this (difficult by machine) block.
I recommend that you have experience in handpiecing. Skill Level : Intermediate to Advanced
Quilting Design
We all know quilting makes the quilt. Start building a reference library of quilting
designs to use in future quilts. Candy will show the treasures from her "box under the bed"
while explaining design elements, background quilting and transferring designs to the
quilt top. These techniques can be used by both hand and machine quilters. Learn how to
make your own feather stencil with template plastic. Bring a quilt top that needs to
be quilted or one you're already working on. Audition some design possibilities. A
demonstration of the multiple needles handquilting technique is included. Also, help with
your handquilting stitch as time permits.
Patchwork Portfolio - Drafting and Construction
Several drafting exercises will give you the tools to make templates for the block of your
choice, in any size, and actually piece it by hand or machine. Drafting in the morning - sewing
in the afternoon. This class could be a great beginning for a sampler quilt. Book required.
No drafting experience is necessary.
